Doctor’s Note becoming Essential to Keep Dogs in a No-Pet Building

Notes from doctors to get permission for allowing dogs in a No-Dog building is becoming a great issue presently. Increasing instances have raised a number of implications involving a legitimate disability on one hand, and dubious doctor’s note on the other.

Although the federal law of the US and associated city laws have provisions that allow disabled people to have proper accommodation, yet there are questions that are raised on the broad classification of disabilities that would seek waivers for their pet dogs.

According to a specialist in housing and pet law, Darryl Vernon, patients with disabilities have to prove two facts to get a waiver for their trained dogs – a serious disability, not any seasonal depression or any mental condition related to bad economy; and the medical advantage the pet dog offers.

Yet, under all these legal provisions, there still lies a fine grey line that actually plays a greater role in determining any legitimate disability along with the matter that the accompanying pet dog helps to alleviate. Even then, owners of No-Pet buildings worry that the practice of coming with doctor’s note would initiate a long list from the tenants for grant of allowing pet dogs with them. It would also come in direct confrontation with sentiments of other residents who choose to prefer dog-free building due to any past bad experience or allergies associated with animals.

However, with all these conflicting provisions coming in the way, a number of people are highly worried about utilization of cracks within the legal framework that would allow permission to accompany pet dogs with increasing number of people who do not require them for any medical reason. This might lead to imposition of further stringent rules by various building owners that would act as an impediment to own trained dogs for the needy victims.

According to reports, owner of an England-based charitable organization, Claire Guest, initiated the project after she found out some signals from her pet dog. Later on, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She even informed a reporter of CBS News, Alphonso Marsh that the phenomenon helped her to believe that animals have special power to detect various diseases and dogs can be trained to nurture their sniffing power and detect diseases of human beings.

Various researches are also emerging that focuses deeply on the sniffing power of dogs. Researchers associated with Working Dog Center of Pennsylvania University are presently training a number of dogs to detect ovarian cancer through smelling various samples.

Other studies have also indicated towards the ability of dogs to detect cancer. According to a German paper released in 2011, almost 71 percent accurate detection of patients suffering from lung cancer was detected by dogs. The paper also reported that dogs were able to distinguish people not having lung cancer with 91 per cent accuracy. A Calif trainer from West Hills is even working in close ties with researchers in teaching dogs various methods to detect patients suffering from ovarian cancer by utilizing breath samples.

How your Dog learning Words?

A research team under the guidance of Dr. Emile van der Zee of University of Lincoln in England revealed that dogs tend to associate words they learn with its size rather than shape.  It shows domestic dogs also learn words just like our toddlers, but in a different way. Toddlers learn to link words with shape while dogs associate words with size.

How your Pet learning words

Dr. Emile van der Zee’s research team worked with a 5 year old Border collie named Gable. The research also suggests mammalian features are diverse when it comes to word learning. Shape matters for us but for dogs the size matters. The scientists shown Gable a horse shoe shaped object called “Dax”. After some training, Gable began to identify other objects of the similar size as “Dax”.

Gable, with its 40 words vocabulary may not pose threat to the human counterparts. However all dogs are not like Gable! Rico, a nine year old Border collie, possess 200 words vocabulary while Chaser, a three year old Border collie knows 1000 words! If it is so, we can teach our dogs thousands of words by organizing a new methodology of word comprehension based on “size” of the objects rather than the “shape” as we used to.

Let us make our best friend even better

Some 20 or 25 thousand years ago dogs where too naughty and not quite friendly with us. After domestication, dogs started to perform many roles for us. They not only assisted us for hunting, herding and pulling loads and sledges, but also started to guard us and ensured protection. Today they serve our Police and Military forces where our cognition saturates.

This close tie up with the human society has given them the nick name Man’s Best Friend. If chaser could fetch us 1000 different objects up on uttering the object’s name, perhaps a well trained dog could help us much better than our fellow human beings!

For a Toddler round shapes of any diameter could be a “Circle” but for a dog, a round shape with greater of lesser diameter than the first round shape it learnt would be a different shape with different name. So what?! Let the unique mammalian feature of learning and comprehension found among dogs remain the same, but we can teach them more words that way.

Let the larger circle be a RUND and smaller ones ROND, but how nice it would be for us to communicate with our pet dogs with a much larger vocabulary.

Your newly arrived cute and furry puppy might have certain natural and inherited manners and habits which may not suit your tastes. These things will surely affect your peace of mind when you and your beloved pet reside under a common roof. Usually a puppy is socialized with other dogs, running vehicles, horrible sound horns etc. Allow it to socialize within the place where it lives or plays. Basic training also includes communication. A trainer should effectively communicate with the puppy to teach it how to behave during different situations and in different circumstances. He should be capable of understanding the way a dog communicates its needs and feelings. A dog usually sends signals to its trainer when it is confused, excited, nervous etc. The emotional state of the dog should be understood by the trainer while training the dog.

Do you know that your beloved pets can make you sick?

Yes. They do. Pathogens that are present in the mouth of the dog may harm humans. A fatal neurological disease, Rabies, is the most familiar one but it could be controlled by vaccines. Dog food is capable of causing food poisoning in Homo sapiens. Toxocara canis, a roundworm which grows in dog’s intestine can grow at the back of a human eye and cause blindness. They may even reside comfortably in human lungs and liver. So, ensure that your lovely pet is roundworm free.

Your puppies are your efficient doctors

Dogs can easily smell our diseases like epilepsy, cancer and diabetes. Experts say that dogs can be trained to sniff out cancer in lung, bladder, skin and breast. They suspect that the canines of the dogs have capability to sense the extraordinarily faint scents released by those abnormal cells. Well mannered and well trained dogs are also being used as service species to serve diabetic people to detect the rise and fall in blood sugar which may harm them if left unnoticed. These dogs give signals when they find some fluctuations even before the patients show symptoms.

Know the intelligence grade of your pet

In 2009, a research presentation was made at American psychological association, which proffered that the dogs are normally as smart as a two year old child. You may find the smartness of your dog from the ranking presented by them which is as follows,

1. Border collies

2. Poodles

3. German shepherds

4. Golden retrievers

5. Doberman.

Older breeds like bull dogs and hound dogs are found to be the slow learners of the doggie varieties.

Jealousy dogs

Dogs may feel jealous of other dogs in some cases. When a fellow dog is rewarded for its wiser tricks, your dog may feel envy and scratch its own body preventing itself from performing those kinds of tricks unrewarded.
